Our Grass is a Cut Above the Rest

For residential and commercial lawns, athletic fields and golf courses, there are three appropriate ways to install Zoysiagrass.
Solid Sod
Plugs
SOLID SOD
____________________________________________________________
Solid, fully grown Zoysiagrass sod is typically delivered in truck-load quantities. These solid sod pieces are laid edge-to-edge, onto the prepared planting bed. The lawn is ready to use as soon as the roots are established, generally in several weeks.
Advantages
"Instant Lawn" or "Instant Golf Course" ready to use.
Disadvantages:
Higher cost than other methods listed below. Generally requires a substantial minimum order for truck delivery and installation.
More Details About Solid Sodding:

The "instant lawn" of solid Zoysiagrass accounts for the higher expense over plugs. Typically sod is shipped only in truckload quantities (1,000 square yards) per delivery. Less than truckload quantities are possible but expensive due to freight costs.
Solid sod can be installed year-round any time the ground is not frozen. Installation of dormant sod in Winter used to be avoided, but as more and more people became convinced of the Winter hardiness of Meyer Z-52 Zoysiagrass, Winrock now regularly harvests and installs Zoysiagrass sod year-round.
Beware of improperly grown Zoysiagrass sod. Meyer Z-52 Zoysiagrass is a slow growing grass and can be contaminated with many faster growing grasses and weeds. Therefore you should require that the growing standards of the sod you purchase be very high.
Winrock Zoysia® sod comes with written purchase standards -- your assurance of the highest growing and delivery standards available. We start with a completely fumigated planting bed free of all weeds and competing grasses. Then we plant, manage and harvest our pure Meyer Z-52 Zoysiagrass to full maturity and perfection. Mowing
The general appearance of Zoysiagrass is probably influenced as much by mowing as any other factor. Mowing height, frequency of mowing, the amount of shaded areas, the kind of mowing equipment, clippings removal and thatch removal are all items to be considered.
The height of Zoysiagrass can be as low as 1/2" to as high as 2" in sunny areas, and all the way up to 3" or higher in shady areas. Hence, the frequency of mowing Zoysiagrass will somewhat depend on the desired height and the amount of care (high, moderate, low) that it is receiving. Highly fertilized and watered areas will require more frequent mowing. A general rule is never to remove more than one-third of the leaf growth. High maintenance Zoysiagrass is to be mowed weekly during the growing season with minimum or low maintenance Zoysiagrass being mowed every other week. Zoysiagrass is grown in shaded areas and generally does not need to be mowed as frequently and leaf growth may be left higher to help compensate for the lower light intensity.
Fertilizing
In fertilizing Zoysiagrass lawns, the object is to produce healthy, attractive grass with as little mowing and maintenance as possible. To attain the goal of a slow growing yet healthy turf, fertilizer materials and amounts must be selected and applied carefully. The number of fertilizer applications will depend on the level of maintenance (i.e. perfection) desired, the soil, the amount of wear and the prevailing weather.
We recommend the use of specially prepared slow release fertilizers for warm season grasses applied at a rate of one pound actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application with 2 to 4 applications during the year (see chart below). The higher rate should be used on high maintenance Zoysiagrass and the lower rate used on low maintenance Zoysiagrass.
Weeds
Because mature Winrock Zoysia® is a very tough, competitive, thick turf, it will choke out weeds and most foreign grasses even on low maintenance lawns. If through neglect or injury weeds do invade your Zoysiagrass and mechanical (mowing) methods cannot control them, chemical control may be used. Zoysiagrasses are tolerant to most warm season turf grass herbicides on the market. However, no one herbicide will control all weeds. Consult a professional about selective herbicides in your area. Weed control chemicals should be used with caution and in strict accordance to directions on the label.

PLUGS
____________________________________________________________
Plugs are 1" to 2" squares cut from Zoysiagrass sod. These can be planted in a prepared planting bed from 6" to 12" apart.
Advantages:
Plugs allow you to economically cover your yard area for much less than solid sod.
Disadvantages:
Because Zoysiagrass is a slow grower you will wait two years or more for a fully grown-in lawn, depending on growing conditions in your area. This may be perfectly acceptable depending on your needs.
